Dinner at The Wine Guy Bistro

On Saturday night my wife and I had an impulse to grab dinner out.  After long waits discouraged us at a couple of our regular stops in the Hyde Park area, we ended up at the newly opened Wine Guy Wine Bar and Bistro in Rookwood Commons.  It ended up being one of the very best new restaurant visits we’ve had in awhile.

The Wine Guy occupies the former Smith & Hawken location next to Starbucks, and they’ve done a beautiful job converting it to an open, warm, & welcoming environment.  Walking in our immediate reaction was “Wow…this is a cool space.”  They’ve kept the design uncluttered which makes it easy to “get” the layout.  The Wine Shop is to the right, Wine Bar in the middle, and The Bistro seating to the left…but everything flows very nicely together.  Since we were there to eat we headed right for The Bistro.

    The Experience
A warm, friendly and relaxing environment where folks can learn about wine and enjoy the company of friends.“  This statement opens the menu and I think The Wine Guy has done an excellent job delivering an experience to support.  Warm wood tables, a well-trained wait staff and a comfortable vibe bring it to life well.  Outside of an overly sensitive smoke detector going off a couple of times everything ran smoothly, especially impressive for only their second night open.

    The Wine
Not surprising given The Wine Guy is a wine shop as well, there are A LOT of wine options from which to choose.  We made it easy on ourselves by choosing a wine flight.  The Wine Guy offers several flight options.  We went with the Cabernet flight, all of which were very good.  $15 for four healthy pours.

    The Food
Everything we tried was delicious, and again, this isn’t something you anticipate coming into a new restaurant on Day 2.  The menu at The Bistro is not overwhelming (just two pages) but comes with plenty of variety to keep you interested.  The best part is The Bistro offers a “tapas” smaller portion option for every item on the menu.  If you enjoy sampling several things like my wife and I do this is a perfect option.

We look forward to heading back to The Wine Guy soon to try out The Wine Shop and The Bar.  They are a welcomed new edition to the Cincinnati wine and restaurant landscape.

    • As the owners of The Wine Guy with my bride Laura of nearly 15 years, I feel very blessed to read a review where a paton enjoys our establishment the way we hoped it would be. Humanity sometimes gets in the way of perfection, but providing an enjoyable experience is always our goal. Thank You! Craig and Laura Decker

    • We really enjoyed ourselves, Craig. You’ve set up an unbelievable experience and couldn’t be happier to have you in Cincinnati. Cheers!
